A heartfelt, uplifting musical based on the true story of the people of Gander, Newfoundland, who cared for stranded passengers after the September 11, 2001 attacks.
New Tampa Players bring Come From Away to the New Tampa Performing Arts Center on Friday, October 16. It's a musical based on a true story that most of us remember from the news: the days following the September 11, 2001 attacks, when U.S. airspace closed and 38 planes carrying nearly 7,000 passengers were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, a small Canadian town. The local residents ended up caring for thousands of unexpected visitors, providing food, shelter, clothing, transportation, and emotional support.
The show follows both the stranded passengers and the people of Gander as they navigate fear, uncertainty, culture clashes, friendships, and, ultimately, a remarkable sense of community. It's an uplifting story about how a tiny town opened its doors to the world when everything felt like it was falling apart. This production arrives at the New Tampa Performing Arts Center twenty-five years after those events, and it's staged by an independent producer who has rented the theatre rather than by the venue itself.
