Tribute concert by Andrea Taylor and The Black & White Band to the songs of Miki Howard and Phyllis Hyman at Blue Strawberry.
Andrea Taylor and The Black & White Band are taking over Blue Strawberry on Sunday, November 22, for a tribute to Miki Howard and Phyllis Hyman. It's a double-bill of sorts, with Taylor and her band working through the catalogs of two of the great R&B voices of their era in a single afternoon.
The set draws from both women, and the songs they've called out so far give you a good sense of the ground they'll cover. You'll hear "Come Share My Love," "You Know How to Love Me," "Don't Wanna Change the World," and "That's What Love Is"βsongs that lean into the melodic, soulful side of Howard and Hyman's work. It's a tribute that puts the singing front and center, with Taylor handling the vocals and the Black & White Band filling out the sound around her.
That band is a full four-piece: Timothy Chandler on keys, Kevin Williams on drums, Darryl Bassett on guitar, and Kenneth Black on bass. With keys, drums, guitar, and bass all on stage, they've got the full rhythm section to back Taylor, so the songs get a live band treatment rather than just a singer and a track.
