Saxophonist Tim Cunningham brings his high-energy show, a blend of smooth jazz and soulful R&B, to Blue Strawberry.
Tim Cunningham plays Blue Strawberry on Friday, November 6, at 7:30 PM. He's a saxophonist who describes his stage show as a sexy blend of smooth jazz and soulful R&B, and the set leans into that crossover—jazz phrasing on a soulful, R&B foundation. It's a high-energy show, so it's more of a night out than a sit-still listening room date.
Cunningham has spent a good part of his career on the big stages. He opened the Cincinnati Music Festival for six years running and played the inaugural St. Lucia Jazz Festival, where he opened for Wynton Marsalis. He's also backed some of the biggest names in R&B—Earth, Wind & Fire, Keith Sweat, Cameo, Boyz II Men, Patti LaBelle, Frankie Beverly, Destiny's Child, and Luther Vandross. On the smooth jazz side, he's opened for Dave Koz, Norman Brown, Brian Culbertson, and George Benson. He's also played the national anthem at Michigan State basketball and St. Louis Rams games, and in 2019, he hosted the first annual Smooth Jazz Cruise on Land right here in St. Louis.
He signed to Atlantic Records in 1994, and his 1996 release Right Turn Only featured "This is the Life," which hit number 19 on the Smooth Jazz Chart. That record sits right in the middle of the sound he's known for: melodic, polished, and rooted in the R&B tradition.
