A concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Anja Bihlmaier with pianist Yeol Eum Son, featuring Mel Bonis's 'Salomé', Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Richard Strauss's 'Elektra' Symphonic Suite.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra is playing Salomé and Elektra: Legendary Women at Powell Hall on Friday, January 29, and Saturday, January 30, 2027. Conductor Anja Bihlmaier leads the orchestra, with pianist Yeol Eum Son taking the solo. The program brings together three distinct pieces: Mel Bonis's Salomé from Trois femmes de légende, Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1, and Richard Strauss's Elektra Symphonic Suite.
The concert centers on indomitable women from literature and mythology. Strauss's Elektra is an epic of revenge, and Bonis's Salomé explores a similarly legendary figure. In between, Yeol Eum Son takes the spotlight with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1. It's a program that moves from the operatic and the mythological to a classical concerto, with the two women of the title framing the set.
There are two ways to catch it. The morning performance is part of the SLSO's Coffee Concert Series, supported by EverTrue, with refreshments provided by Kaldi's Coffee Roasting Co. and Strange Donuts. The evening performance is followed by the SLSO's After Party, a relaxed, modern post-concert hang in the lobby that doesn't require an extra ticket.
