A concert by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra featuring Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances, Kris Bowers' For a Younger Self, and Miguel FarĂas' Retratos Australes, conducted by Paolo Bortolameolli.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra brings Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances Living Portraits to Powell Hall on Saturday, Jan 16, 2027, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, Jan 17, at 3:00 PM. Both performances run about an hour and 50 minutes, including intermission, and are presented by the Whitaker Foundation.
Conductor Paolo Bortolameolli leads the program, which centers on Sergei Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances. It's a capstone work, described as a poignant and powerful anthology of the composer's own life's journey. The evening pairs it with Kris Bowers' For a Younger Self, a violin concerto inspired by the hero's journey and the artistry of violinist Charles Yang, who makes a return to Powell Hall for the piece. Rounding out the bill is Miguel FarĂas' Retratos Australes, which paints a dynamic portrait of life in the southernmost region of South America.
Between the three, the program covers a lot of ground: Rachmaninoff's late-career reflection, Bowers' concerto written for a specific player, and FarĂas' look at the southern tip of South America. It's a mix of a late-life summary, a piece built around a particular musician, and a portrait of a specific place.

If you're staying after the music, there's the SLSO's After Party—a relaxed, modern post-concert hang in the lobby that doesn't require an additional ticket. The concert runs Saturday at 7:30 PM and Sunday at 3:00 PM at Powell Hall, and the After Party follows.
