A live orchestral adaptation of the One Piece animated series, performed by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra with the show's greatest moments playing on screen.
One Piece in Concert comes to Powell Hall on Saturday, Jan 2, and Sunday, Jan 3, with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra performing the music of the One Piece animated series live on stage. It's a synchronized show: the orchestra plays while some of the series' biggest moments run on screen, covering more than 25 years of the Straw Hat Crew's adventures. The whole thing runs two hours and twenty minutes, including intermission.
Conducting the SLSO is Kohei Tanaka, and the program is built around the One Piece Music Symphony. It mixes the newer stuff with the older tracks that have defined the series over the decades. You'll hear the brand-new TV opening "UUUUUS!" alongside pieces like "Haha naru Umi" (Mother Sea), "Sekai no ichiban oden da!!" (This is the best oden in the world!!), and "Ore no saikouchiten" (Luffy's Gear 5 Theme). If you've followed the story for a while, those titles should ring a bell.
Because the music is tied to the visuals, it's a bit different from a standard symphony night. The orchestra is playing in time with the scenes on screen, so the music and the animation move together. The set spans a huge chunk of the series' history, from the early days to the more recent arcs, and the two-plus-hour runtime gives it plenty of room to breathe. If you're a fan of the show, it's a chance to hear the score live rather than through speakers.
