Rare duo concert by avant-garde jazz trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and guitarist Joe Morris, presented by New Music Circle at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation.
Wadada Leo Smith and Joe Morris play as a duo at the Pulitzer Arts Foundation on Sunday, October 25, with the concert presented by New Music Circle. It's a rare pairing: Smith on trumpet and Morris on guitar, two figures both known for their work in avant-garde jazz and improvised music. They're playing as a duo, which is how they've worked together for years.
On stage, they build spontaneous, real-time compositions through an open dialogue between trumpet and guitar. It's a conversation rather than a set of pre-written pieces, and that's the mode of working that has defined their long artistic collaboration. You can hear it on their recent recording, Earth's Frequencies, which came out in 2024.
There's a bit of a crossover here, too. Wadada Leo Smith is a trumpeter and composer, but he's also a visual artist, and this performance is presented by New Music Circle together with the Pulitzer Arts Foundation. The two of them are internationally recognized for their contributions to avant-garde jazz and improvised music, and this duo format is where they've spent much of their time together.
