St. Louis vocalist Margery Handy brings her tribute to Roberta Flack's music to Blue Strawberry, marking her venue debut.
Margery Handy makes her Blue Strawberry debut on Tuesday, October 27, with a set titled Love Is A Song — The Music Of Roberta Flack. She's a St. Louis area vocalist who works across genres, known for a rich, velvety tone and robust Broadway vocals. Her style blends classic smoky-jazz phrasing with old-school R&B and soft rock, and she draws from a wide range of influences: Natalie Cole, Roberta Flack, Sarah Vaughan, Dionne Warwick, Peggy Lee, Phyllis Hyman and Diana Ross. This show focuses on Flack, whose work sits right in that intersection of jazz, soul and pop.
Handy isn't performing alone. She's joined by Jerome Davis, a veteran stage actor and longtime company member of The St. Louis Black Rep, and Larry D. Pry, a nationally recognized vocal coach and music director who has taught at Webster, Washington University and St. Louis University. Pry also picked up the 2024 St. Louis Theatre Circle Award for Outstanding Musical Director. With a Broadway-trained voice and a jazz-inflected approach, Handy's set pulls from that same tradition of singer-songwriters who could move between a jazz club and a theater without missing a beat.
