Cabaret artist Ken Haller and music director Ron McGowan celebrate the music of Stephen Sondheim in an all-ages show at Blue Strawberry.
Ken Haller brings The Joy of Sondheim to Blue Strawberry on Wednesday, October 28, at 7:30 PM, with a second performance on Sunday, November 1, at 4 PM. He's joined by music director Ron McGowan, and the whole thing is built around the work of Stephen Sondheim.
Sondheim is a songwriter who usually gets described in two very different ways. On one hand, he's the brilliant, clever, cerebral Shakespeare of American musical theater. On the other, he's often called cold, unemotional and detached. The Joy of Sondheim is Haller and McGowan's attempt to find the other side of thatβthe passion, the fun and the playfulness that they see as a huge part of his legacy. They've put together a set that leans into those lighter, more spirited moments, and they're presenting it as a joyful evening with the music of one of Broadway's greatest songwriters.
Blue Strawberry is a new music showroom and lounge in the Central West End, and it's an all-ages venue, so you can bring the kids along if you're into that. They serve dinner and drinks before and during the show, with a $15 per-guest minimum, so it's the kind of place where you can eat your meal and have a few drinks while you listen rather than just sitting in a dark room. Doors usually open at 6 PM, which gives you plenty of time to get settled before the music starts.
