The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra presents Brahms' Third Symphony with violinist James Ehnes and conductor Stéphane Denève, part of the Coffee Concert Series.
The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra brings Brahms' Third Fierce Longing to Powell Hall on Friday, Jan 8, Saturday, Jan 9, and Sunday, Jan 10. It's a three-performance run, so you can pick the slot that fits your weekend best.
The program centers on Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3, one of his most personal works. The critic Eduard Hanslick once described it as artistically the most nearly perfect of Brahms' collection, and it's the anchor of the whole set. Beside it, the SLSO is pairing a modern response: Vexierbild by composer Detlev Glanert, an SLSO co-commission. The two pieces together put a contemporary perspective right up against one of the 19th century's most intimate symphonies.
Filling out the bill is Max Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, an impassioned piece that brings back multi-Grammy Award-winning violinist James Ehnes to St. Louis. He'll be leading the violin part, with Stéphane Denève conducting the SLSO musicians. Between the three works, you've got a new commission, a romantic concerto, and a Brahms symphony—a fair amount of ground for one program.
