Blues rock concert by harmonica player Will Wilde, known for his Wilde Tuned harmonicas.
Will Wilde plays The Brook on Friday 18 September, bringing his brand of blues rock to Portswood. He's a Brighton-based harmonica player, singer and songwriter, and the night is built around his harmonica work.
He didn't start in a conservatory. He picked up a cheap plastic harmonica at a house party when he was sixteen and spent hours playing along to Muddy Waters records. From there he built a following on YouTube with harmonica covers of classic rock guitar solos — Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Free Bird' being one of them — and caught the attention of blues rock legend Walter Trout. Trout invited him to play on the album Broken, which hit number one on the Billboard Blues Album Chart; in return, Trout played guitar on the title track of Wilde's own album, The Blues Is Still Alive.
Music runs in the family, too. His grandfather was a wartime jazz and blues pianist, and his sister Dani Wilde is an acclaimed blues singer and guitarist. His own style draws on Gary Moore and Sonny Boy Williamson, so you can get a good sense of where he's coming from before you even step through the door.
