A day of talks and performances exploring the medieval legend of Sir Bevis, with introductions, dramatic readings and an investigation of links to Southampton.
Tudor House & Garden is hosting a study day on The Myth of Sir Bevis on Thursday 8 October, from 10.30am to 2.30pm. It's a morning and early afternoon dedicated to one of the city's most famous mythical sons, a medieval legend who, according to the stories, hailed from Southampton.
The day is set in the late medieval period, when poems of chivalry, gallantry and adventure were at their peak. Sir Bevis was one of the most popular among them—a globetrotting tale of murder, enslavement, love and retribution that was translated into a multitude of languages and read across Europe. Because the legend places Bevis in Southampton and sets parts of the story here, he's long been claimed as the city's most famous mythical son.
The programme opens with an introduction to the poem's composition and background, followed by a dramatic reading of portions of the work. After that, the session turns to an investigation into the links between the Bevis myth and the city itself. Leading the day are Dr Lynn Forest-Hill, Matt Garner, Zana Parker and Andy Skinner.

Admission to the house is included on the day, and a copy of Dr Lynn Forest-Hill's translation, The Romance of Sir Bevis of Hampton, will be available to buy. Tickets are £25, and the whole thing runs from 10.30am to 2.30pm at Tudor House & Garden, Bugle Street, Southampton, SO14 2AD.
