Concert by the Swedish power pop band The Wannadies at The Brook.
The Wannadies play The Brook on Sunday 15 November, bringing their Swedish power pop to Southampton. If you've come across them before, it's likely from the 90s, when they were one of the bigger names coming out of the Nordics. They formed in Skellefteå, in northern Sweden, back in 1988, and their debut single, 'My Hometown', made a splash across the region in 1990. International recognition came a bit later, with 'You and Me Song' from their third album, Be a Girl.
That track ended up in the Hollywood film Romeo & Juliet and the English TV series Coronation Street, which gave them a fair bit of exposure beyond the Nordic countries. Along with power pop songs like 'Hit' and 'Might be Stars', they toured globally for years before taking a long break. They went on hiatus in 2003 and stayed quiet for nineteen years, returning to the stage in 2022. At one point, they were crowned 'Pop Genius', a title that fits the bright, melodic sound they've built their name on.
It's a long way from Skellefteå to Southampton, but they'll be playing the same songs that made them known. The set will be their usual power pop, the kind of thing that sits comfortably between the pop and indie of the 90s. If you've only ever heard them on a soundtrack or a compilation, this is a chance to hear it live.
