A lively 90-minute show exploring the art of confident communication, presented by Hamwic Speakers, mixing real-life stories with practical speaking tips and audience participation.
Hamwic Speakers are taking over Mayflower Studios on Saturday 3 October with The Art of Conversation, a 90-minute show about confident communication. It's put on by the club itself — Hamwic Speakers is a friendly, non-profit public speaking club based right here in Southampton.
The first half mixes real-life stories told by club members with practical speaking tips, live demonstrations and audience participation. The second half opens up into an interactive workshop called Powerful Presence – Commanding the Stage, led by speaker and trainer Steve Catchick, followed by a session with the club's ex-presidents George Weller and David Collins. Between them, they work through why we get nerves, how to build a stronger stage presence, how to think on your feet, how to handle difficult audiences and how to sharpen improvisation and performance skills.
It's recommended for ages 12 and over, and the club welcomes people of every ability, from complete beginners to experienced competitors — including those interested in debating, stand-up comedy, motivational speaking and public speaking competitions. If you've ever wanted to get better at talking in front of people, this is a good place to start.
