Film screening of the horror film Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, at Showcase Cinema de Lux.
Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is screening at Showcase Cinema de Lux on Monday 24 August. It's the latest horror from writer-director Jane Schoenbrun, who follows a filmmaker named Kris, chosen to direct a reboot of the Camp Miasma series. The original films built a cult following around their spear-wielding killer, Little Death, and Kris has to leave her partner Mari and their polyamorous third wheel, Thor, to return to the abandoned summer camp where the first films were shot. Waiting for her there is Billy, a Norma Desmond-like recluse who starred in the original.
Schoenbrun shot the whole thing in just 25 days, and the film works its way through a hypersexualised and problematic subgenre of cinema from an LGBTQ lens. It builds on the themes of gender identity and authentic self-expression she explored in her previous work, I Saw the TV Glow, so if that one hit home, this is right in the same vein. The cast includes Hannah Einbinder, Jack Haven, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Aren Buchholz, and Gillian Anderson.
