Sea Pictures Concert

Southampton Choral Society are back on Saturday 4 July with their summer concert, Sea Pictures, at St James Road Methodist Church. It's a maritime-themed afternoon, and the programme stays firmly on the water: Edward Elgar's Sea Pictures takes the lead, with Charles Villiers Stanford's Songs of the Fleet alongside it.

Both pieces are choral arrangements rather than the original versions. Sea Pictures is Harvey Brough's arrangement of Elgar's cycle, and Songs of the Fleet is a version by the society's own musical director, Andrew Hayman. Between them, they cover a fair bit of ground—Elgar's cycle is a set of songs for voice and orchestra, and Stanford's is a collection of naval songs, so the two together give you a good look at how different composers approached the sea.

The society is the one putting this on, and they're the main feature of the afternoon. If you're into choral music, this is their summer outing, and it's a paid event rather than a free one. The concert starts at 15:00, so it's a Saturday afternoon affair rather than an evening thing.
