A guided tour led by the Southampton Tourist Guides Association exploring the medieval walls and historic buildings of Southampton, with a visit to the town vaults.
Overground and Underground! is a guided walk through Southampton's medieval history, led by the Southampton Tourist Guides Association. It starts at The Bargate on the north side of the town, and the whole thing runs for about 90 minutes.
The first half is all about the walls. Much of the city's medieval wall still stands, and the walk takes you along those stretches, stopping at historic buildings and picking up stories of the famous people who've lived in or visited Southampton over the centuries. It's a good way to see the old fortifications and get a sense of how the town was laid out back then.
Then it goes underground. The route ventures down into some of the town's vaults, so you get to see the parts of the city that usually stay hidden. Between the walls above and the vaults below, it's a fair bit of ground to cover in one go.

There are plenty of dates to choose from over the next few weeks. The August runs are on Sunday 9 August, Saturday 15 August, Sunday 16 August, Saturday 22 August, Sunday 23 August, and Saturday 29 August, with doors and the start at 10:30am. If you'd rather a weekend afternoon, there are two more in September: Saturday 5 September and Sunday 6 September, both with doors and the start at 1:30pm. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
