Overground and Underground!

Overground and Underground! kicks off at The Bargate on Saturday 1 August, with guided heritage tours of Southampton's medieval walls and town vaults running throughout the summer. It's a walk that does exactly what the title says: you spend the first part following the line of the city's old walls, taking in the stories of the historic buildings and the famous people who've lived in and visited over the centuries, before heading underground into some of the town's vaults. The whole thing takes about 90 minutes.

The walk is run by the Southampton Tourist Guides Association, the city's longest-running tour guiding organisation. They trace their origins back to 1976 – the year Southampton won the FA Cup and the city was still very much a working port. The association was founded by David Adcock, who trained as a guide in 2005 after working with East European migrants, driven by a desire to help them love and respect their new home.

There are plenty of dates to choose from if the first one doesn't suit. The weekend tours run on Saturdays and Sundays throughout August – the 1st and 2nd, 8th and 9th, 15th and 16th, 22nd and 23rd, and 29th and 30th – all starting at 10:30am. There are also two dates in early September: Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th, both starting at 1:30pm. Evening walks also run during the week as well as on weekends, so you've got a fair few options if you can't make a morning or afternoon slot.

All the tours meet at The Bargate on the North Side of the city. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
