Overground and Underground!

Overground and Underground! is running at The Bargate on various dates from 5 July to 6 September, a guided tour of Southampton's medieval walls and the vaults beneath them. It's run by the Southampton Tourist Guides Association, and the whole thing takes about 90 minutes.

Southampton is a city with a lot of history held within its medieval walls, many of which you can still see today. The tour takes you along those walls and past the old buildings that still stand, with the guides filling in the gaps on the famous people who lived here or passed through over the centuries. It's the kind of thing you walk past every day without really noticing, so it's a good excuse to actually stop and look.

The second half is where the title comes in: you go underground into some of the town's vaults to see a side of the city that usually stays hidden. Between the walls above and the vaults below, you get a decent sense of how the town was built and how it's changed. The guides are from the Southampton Tourist Guides Association, so you're in safe hands for the historical side of things.

It's a 90-minute tour, and children need to be accompanied by an adult. You'll find it at The Bargate North Side, High Street, Southampton SO14 2DJ, with dates running from 5 July through to 6 September.
