National Theatre Live screening of The Playboy of the Western World, directed by Caitriona McLaughlin, filmed live on stage at the National Theatre.
The Playboy of the Western World comes to Harbour Lights Picturehouse as part of National Theatre Live, with screenings running from Thursday 20 August to Thursday 8 October. It's a filmed version of the National Theatre production, so you get the full stage show on the big screen right here in Southampton rather than having to make the trip to London.
The play is based on John Millington Synge's classic, and the story centres on Pegeen Flaherty, whose life is turned upside down when a young man walks into her pub claiming he's killed his father. Instead of being shunned, he becomes a local hero, until a second man arrives and things get complicated. The production is described as a darkly funny tale full of secrets, and it's directed by Caitríona McLaughlin.
There are some recognisable names in the cast. Nicola Coughlan, known from Bridgerton, takes the lead as Pegeen, and she's joined by Éanna Hardwicke, who you'll remember from The Sixth Commandment, and Siobhán McSweeney, a regular on Derry Girls. It's a strong trio to carry the story, and having them all on screen together is a good reason to catch it.

Practical details: the cinema presentation runs 157 minutes, so it's a proper evening's entertainment rather than a quick trip.
