National Theatre Live screening of The Misanthrope, directed by Indhu Rubasingham, with Sandra Oh in the title role.
National Theatre Live is bringing The Misanthrope to the big screen at Showcase Cinema de Lux on Wednesday 24 September. It's a filmed version of the National Theatre production, so you get the full stage show without having to make the trip to London. The screening runs for 2 hours and 30 minutes.
This isn't Molière's original The Misanthrope as you might remember it from school. It's a reimagining by Martin Crimp, directed by Indhu Rubasingham and filmed live at the National Theatre. Crimp has shifted the setting and the characters, and Rubasingham has turned it into a razor-sharp comedy of manners that feels urgently contemporary rather than like a museum piece. The original's dark comedy is still there, but it's dressed up for the present day.
Sandra Oh, whom you'll recognise from Killing Eve, takes the title role. She plays Alice, a brilliant novelist who despises the carefully constructed lies of modern society and finds herself paying the price for speaking her truth in a world that would rather silence her. It's a role that sits right in the middle of the play's tension: the clash between being honest and getting along with everyone else. She's joined by Paul Chahidi, Abigail Cruttenden, Imogen Elliott, and Rina Fatania, with Rubasingham directing the whole thing.
