A family variety show featuring music from the 1960s to the 2020s, performed by local talent including a 60-strong choir, dance academies and school music departments, with proceeds supporting local charities.
Music Through the Decades comes to the Mayflower Theatre on Sunday 31 January 2027, a family variety show that runs through chart-topping hits from the 1960s to the 2020s. It's a local production, with the whole bill made up of talent from around Southampton and Hampshire. The night runs for about two hours and 15 minutes, including an interval.
The line-up is a broad one. You'll see the SJ Academy of Dance, Phoenix Performing Arts, and a 60-strong choir, alongside singers Casey Watson and The Colour Brothers, the Soul Sounds Choir, and Art Asia Dancers. Students from The Romsey School Music Department also take part, and there are dancers from ethnic communities throughout the city. Sam Fraser from BBC Radio Solent hosts the evening, so there's a familiar voice keeping things moving between the sets.
Organisers Ken Wilde and Sally Hillyear describe the show as "a celebration of everything that's special about our local community," and that's a fair summary: it brings together local performers, businesses, and three charities for one night. The money raised goes to Abby's Heroes, who support children, teenagers, and young adults on the Piam Brown ward at Southampton General Hospital; George's Rockstars, who bring music therapy to children in hospital; and The Rose Road Association, which cares for children and young people with complex disabilities across Southampton and the surrounding areas.
