Marine Remixed

Marine Remixed comes to The Stage Door on Friday 18 September, from 19:30 to 21:30. It's a sonic experiment by Turner Sims, the University of Southampton's music venue, in partnership with the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, and it forms part of the British Science Festival 2026.

The whole thing started with the work of four marine researchers. Professor Clive Trueman studies fish otoliths, which open a window into the past; Jacob Kleboe works on micro-plastics in coral; Doctor Julie Mestre and Amy Feakes track whale feeding patterns in the Antarctic; and Professor Helen Farr's research reaches back 65,000 years to the maritime movement of people. Those recordings were turned into a remix pack of loops and samples, which young producers from the Music Production Collective and Mix'zine — from Southampton and IOW Music — rework alongside Turner Sims' commissioned piece, The Ocean Remembers.

The night is co-curated and promoted by the venue's Assistant Producers, a group of young people building skills in programming, producing and promotion. It's free to attend, and the venue is not wheelchair accessible. The session runs from 19:30 to 21:30, so it's a two-hour night.
