A beginner-friendly workshop led by award-winning printmaker Katherine Anteney where participants create their own linocut Christmas cards with letterpress printing included.
Katherine Anteney is leading a linocutting workshop at Southampton City Art Gallery on Saturday 21 November, a full day dedicated to making your own greeting cards. Anteney is an award-winning printmaker, and she'll be guiding you through the whole process from start to finish.
The morning and early afternoon are about the linocut itself. You'll carve your own image into a lino block and print it onto cards—the session is framed around Christmas cards, but you can make them for any other occasion you like. Once the image is printed, there's a second stage: everyone adds a greeting using letterpress printing, working with vintage type and a press to stamp the words. It's a nice way to see two different printing traditions in one go, and you leave with a finished set of cards rather than just a single print.
One of the best things about it is that you don't need to bring anything. All the materials are provided, including the cards and envelopes, so you can just turn up and get stuck in. It's run by Southampton Cultural Services, and they've made it clear it's suited to beginners, so you don't need to have ever touched a lino cutter before to join in.
