Guided heritage walk led by See Southampton Heritage Guides through Southampton's medieval walls and Roman merchant vaults, marking the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence.
See Southampton Heritage Guides are starting their Hidden History Heritage Walk at The Bargate on Saturday 17 October, and it runs right through to 28 February 2027. It's a guided walk that takes you through the city's layers, from the Romans and the Normans up to the Second World War. The guides are qualified local heritage experts, and they welcome residents, visitors and cruise ship passengers alike.
Southampton's old town still stands more medieval wall than any other city in the country, and its merchant vaults date back to the Roman port era. The route starts at that Roman port and works its way through the Normans and the city's royal castle, then on to its years as an elegant spa town and the stories of resident novelist Jane Austen. From there it moves to the city's pivotal role in the Second World War and famous ships like the 1620 Pilgrim Fathers' Mayflower and the Titanic. This season also marks the 250th anniversary of the 1776 American Declaration of Independence, and the walk traces the American connection from the Mayflower's departure at West Quay through to the wartime story.
