Hands on History: Soaring Spitfires

SeaCity Museum is hosting Hands on History: Soaring Spitfires on Friday 14 August, a session for children aged seven and up to mark the 90th anniversary of the Supermarine Spitfire's first flight. The main thing you'll be doing is making water-powered rocket planes, so it's a hands-on one rather than just sitting and listening.

The session is part of the museum's Hands On History programme, which is built around discovering history in a fun, interactive way—digging into stories and investigating artefacts rather than just reading plaques. This particular one celebrates the story of the Spitfire, the most famous fighter plane of the Second World War, and the 90 years that have passed since it first took to the air.

If you've not been in a while, SeaCity Museum sits right in the heart of the city at the Civic Centre on Havelock Road. It's home to three interactive exhibitions: Southampton's Titanic Story, which has an interactive model of the RMS Titanic, recorded messages from its passengers and original objects from the ship; Gateway to the World; and the newer Southampton Stories in the Pavilion, which covers 200,000 years of the city's past, from Roman traders and Saxon settlers to the growth of the docks.

There are two sessions on the day: one from 10:30am to 12:00pm and another from 1:00pm to 2:30pm. It costs £8.00 per child, and adults don't have to pay. No pre-booking is needed, so you can just turn up.
