Family concert with music from Harry Potter, Ghostbusters and Wicked, spooky classical pieces, the story 'The Theatre Ghost' and dance from the New Forest School of Dance.
City of Southampton Orchestra are taking over Central Hall on Saturday 17 October for their Spooktacular Family Concert, a morning and afternoon of spooky classical music and storytelling. There are two performances on the day, one at 11:00am and another at 2:00pm, each running for about an hour.
The music pulls from two very different worlds. On one hand, there's the big-screen stuff: the Harry Potter Symphonic Suite, Ghostbusters and Wicked. On the other, some of the spookier corners of the classical repertoire, with Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King and Mussorgsky's A Night on the Bare Mountain both on the bill. Narrator Phil Cheesman tells the story of The Theatre Ghost as the orchestra plays along, and the whole thing is staged alongside the New Forest School of Dance.
It's built for children of all ages and their families, and it's not a sit-still kind of concert. The audience is encouraged to get up, move around, ask questions of the conductor and the orchestra, and send in drawings to be shown on a big screen. The City of Southampton Orchestra is conducted by John Traill.
