The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of classic Christmas movie scores and soundtracks at the Mayflower Theatre.
The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra are playing Christmas at the Movies at the Mayflower Theatre on Sunday 29 November, a concert built around the soundtracks of Christmas cinema. It's a mix of the big, sweeping scores and the smaller, more familiar melodies that usually run in the background of the films we watch every December.
They've pulled from a fair few different eras. There's the older, black-and-white classic It's a Wonderful Life, and the 80s nostalgia of Home Alone and E.T., alongside more recent favourites like The Polar Express, Harry Potter, and Frozen. Hearing them live is a different thing from having them on the telly — the full orchestra takes over the melodies that you usually only hear as part of a scene.
The night is part of a partnership between the BSO and the Mayflower, set up to bring live orchestral music to people in and around Southampton with a range of concerts for different ages and interests. The two organisations describe it as a shared commitment to orchestral music and to building connections with local communities, so this isn't a one-off — it's one of a wider programme they're running together.
