A batik workshop for beginners led by textile artist Mary Eynon, where participants create a decorated fabric piece inspired by autumn forms.
Mary Eynon is running a batik workshop at Southampton City Art Gallery on Sunday 15 November, from 2pm to 4.30pm. It's called Autumn Forms and Colour, and it's aimed at beginners, so you don't need to have picked up a brush or a wax pot before to get involved.
The session is built around the natural forms of autumn. You'll be drawing on the shapes and colours found in the landscape this time of year to create a decorated batik fabric piece, which you can then turn into a scarf or a decorative wall hanging. It's a hands-on afternoon: you'll be working with wax and dye to build up your design, and you'll leave with something you've made yourself.
Eynon is a textile artist and teacher whose work comes from walking and the landscape. She captures her environment through a variety of mediums to express the natural beauty of her surroundings, and she describes her practice as being about her entire being and what it means to be her. Much of her work is left open for the viewer to discover its tactile qualities, and that same focus on the sensory side of things runs through the workshop. The session is suitable for adults and young people over 16, and all levels of experience are welcome, so it works whether you're a complete novice or someone who already crafts.
