Avebury Papers Archaeology Study Day

Southampton City Art Gallery is hosting the Avebury Papers Archaeology Study Day on Saturday 10 October, from 10am to 3.30pm. It's a day of talks and discussion built around The Avebury Papers, a four-year UKRI-funded project that's been digitising, exploring and sharing the multimedia archive of Avebury's Neolithic origins. The study day sits alongside the project's art commission, with works by Gayle Chong Kwan and Kialy Tihngang on display at the gallery from 13 June to 17 October.

The morning and afternoon are split between four talks, each taking a different angle on the site. Professor Mark Gillings opens with Introducing Avebury, followed by Dr Rosumund Cleal on Keiler, Crawford and Avebury, Dr Ben Chan on Artefactual Avebury and Dr Fran Allfrey on Archival Avebury. Together they pull on the 1930s and 40s diaries of excavator William Young, with input from researchers including Professor Mark Gillings, Professor Josh Pollard and Dr Colleen Morgan. The session is designed to bring the Avebury site to life for visitors, with each talk opening up a different facet of the monument.

It's a bit of a crossover day, bringing together art, archaeology and community engagement, and it's free to attend, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. To reserve a place, you'll need to put down a fully refundable £10 deposit, which is returned after you attend, with the option of a voluntary contribution on top. The whole thing runs in the Lecture Theatre at Southampton City Art Gallery, Commercial Road, SO14 7LP, from 10am to 3.30pm.
