A workshop exploring the art of gelli printing with an autumn colour palette, focusing on mark-making and layering techniques to create layered prints.
Autumn Gelli Prints is running at Southampton City Art Gallery on Sunday 11 October, from 11am to 1.30pm. It's a workshop on gelli printing, a printmaking technique that works by layering acrylic paint onto a gelatinous plate and pulling a print from it. The process is repeated to build depth and complexity, so you're not just making one print and stopping there; you're working back into the same image over and over.
This particular session is built around an autumn palette, and the focus is on experimenting with different mark-making techniques and layering. You'll be working with the colours of the season, and the prints you make can go a few different ways: they work as collage papers, they can be turned into greeting cards, or they can stand as artworks in their own right. It's as much about the process of building the image as it is about what you end up with.
The workshop is run by Southampton Cultural Services and is suitable for adults, so it's a good one if you've never tried printmaking before and want to get a handle on how it works. You'll be working in the gallery on Commercial Road, in the heart of the city, rather than tucked away in a studio.
