A hands-on art workshop for all ages exploring surrealism through collage, drawing and coloured media, with three sessions available.
Southampton City Art Gallery is hosting Art for All: Surrealism Starts Here on Tuesday 11 August, a hands-on workshop that lets you have a go at surrealism yourself. It's part of the gallery's Art for All programme, a series of workshops where you work your way through the weird world of surrealism using collage, drawing and coloured media. The gallery describes the results as very funny and slightly scary, which is about as close as you can get to a description of surrealism without actually doing it.
Before you set to work, you're encouraged to wander through the gallery's surrealism display, so you can see the real thing before you start making your own. It's a good way to get a feel for the style and maybe pick up a few ideas to bring back to the table. Adults are welcome to take part alongside the children, so it works as a family thing as much as a solo one.
The gallery itself is in the city's Cultural Quarter on Commercial Road, and it's been there since 1939. It's the kind of place that draws in art lovers, curious amateurs and people who just enjoy the atmosphere of a gallery, with exhibitions that run from painting, sculpture and drawing through to photography and film, alongside permanent collections and displays that change regularly. Entry is free, and it sits right next to SeaCity Museum, with gallery trails, monthly art clubs and a wide range of activities for all ages.
