Art for All: Highland Cows in Clay

Southampton City Art Gallery is hosting a clay workshop on Tuesday 25 August, where you can make your own relief tile of a highland cow. It's part of the gallery's Art for All family of activities, and it's open to children over five and adults alike, so it's one of those things you can do with the kids or just turn up to yourself.

The session is all about sculpting: you'll be working with a range of techniques and mark-making tools to build up your highland cow in relief, rather than as a free-standing figure. For the background, you're encouraged to look at the paintings on display around the gallery and use them as inspiration to create a landscape to set your cow in. It's a nice way to spend a morning or afternoon, and you'll come away with something you've actually made.

The gallery itself is on Commercial Road in the city's Cultural Quarter, and it's been open since 1939. It's a space that works for a few different kinds of visitor: art lovers, curious amateurs, and people who just enjoy the atmosphere of a gallery. The exhibitions range from painting, sculpture and drawing to photography and film, with permanent collections and displays that change regularly. Entry is free, and it sits right next to SeaCity Museum, with gallery trails, monthly art clubs and activities for all ages.

There are three sessions to choose from on the day: 10.30am–12noon, 12.30pm–2pm and 2.30pm–4pm, so you can pick the one that fits your schedule. It's £8 per participating child or adult, and you get a free accompanying adult ticket, though anyone under 16 must be accompanied.
