Art for All: Greek Pottery Pots

Southampton City Art Gallery is hosting a Greek pottery workshop on Wednesday 19 August, part of its Art for All programme. It's open to everyone aged six and up, so it works as a family thing or something you do on your own. The session is all about making your own Greek pots, with Greek myths and legends as the starting point.

On the practical side, you'll be working with coil and pinch pot techniques—two of the most basic ways of building with clay—and learning how to join and embellish the pieces. If you've never touched clay before, it's a good place to start; if you have, it's a chance to try a specific style. Adults are welcome to take part alongside children, and under-16s need to be accompanied.

There's a nice way to stretch the visit, too. The gallery suggests heading upstairs to see the Perseus Series by Edward Burne-Jones, which is on display and sits right in the same world of Greek mythology. It's a good companion to the workshop—you can get a feel for the stories before you start making your own version.

It runs across three sessions on the day: 10.30am to 12 noon, 12.30pm to 2pm, and 2.30pm to 4pm, so you can pick the one that fits your schedule. It's £8 per participating child or adult, and accompanying adults go free. The gallery is on Commercial Road, Southampton, Hampshire SO14 7LP.
