Jazz trio led by pianist Zoe Rahman plays her new album 'Hull Suite Live' at the Firth Hall of the University of Sheffield.
Zoe Rahman plays Firth Hall on Thursday 19 November, with her trio bringing music from her new album Hull Suite Live to the University of Sheffield. It's a piano trio night, with Rahman on piano, Gene Calderazzo on drums and Alec Dankworth on double bass.
Hull Suite Live was commissioned by the Hull Jazz Festival for World Piano Day 2024. It's a piece built around voyage, migration and the sea, taking its cues from two statues in Hull and Rahman's own family history. Jazz FM called the album "absolutely beautiful", and Jazzwise noted its "full-blooded, chord-splashing, orchestral approach to the acoustic piano" — a good way to set the scene for how it translates to the stage.
Rahman is a British jazz pianist and composer whose style is rooted in jazz but shaped by her classical background, her British and Bengali heritage and a broad musical taste. She's a MOBO Award winner, a Mercury Prize nominee and an Ivor Novello Award winner, and was named Perrier Young Jazz Musician of the Year in 1999. Her debut trio album, The Cynic, was short-listed for the BBC Radio 3 jazz album of the year in 2001, and her second, Melting Pot, earned her that Mercury nomination in 2006.
