Folk concert by the Access Folk artists Anna Anise, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Satnam Galsian and Maddie Morris, turning the project's findings on folk singing in England into songs.
Of These Folk play Firth Hall on Thursday 5 November, a concert that turns five years of research into a night of songs and reflections. The evening comes out of Access Folk, a project led by singer Professor Fay Hield that looked at access to folk singing across England. Presented by Sound Roots and supported by Access Folk at the University of Sheffield, the concert takes the study's findings and works them into music, with each artist bringing their own take on belonging, participation and the way folk singing traditions in England continue to change.
The line-up brings together four singers: Anna Anise, Cohen Braithwaite-Kilcoyne, Satnam Galsian and Maddie Morris. Each one works from the same starting point — the Access Folk research — but they approach it from different angles, so the set is built around those individual perspectives rather than a single, uniform sound. It's a night of songs and musical responses, with the research itself acting as the common thread.
If you're around during the day, there's more to it than just the gig. An Access Folk celebration runs from 2pm to 7:30pm, with exhibitions, talks and singarounds, so you can get a proper sense of the project before the music starts. The concert is presented by Performance Venues, with unreserved seating.
