Woodcut Printmaking

Carousel Print Studio is running a one-day woodcut printmaking workshop on Saturday 20 February 2027, from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm. It's held at the studio's home on the ground floor of Exchange Place Studios on Exchange Street in Sheffield City Centre, S2 5TR.

Woodcut is the oldest form of relief printmaking, an ancient Eastern technique that's as straightforward as it sounds: you carve images and designs into sheets of plywood with hand tools, then ink the surface and press it onto paper. The parts you carve away stay white, and the parts you leave alone hold the ink. By the end of the day, you'll have your own relief prints to take home and frame, and enough guidance to keep making them in your own time. All the materials, equipment, and aprons are provided, so you just need to turn up.

The day is run by Sam Groom, a printmaker and collage artist who's been a full-time practising artist for over eleven years. She's a former secondary school art teacher and head of department, and has won the Derbyshire Open Art printmaking prize twice. Her background is a mix of the practical and the academic: a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Sculpture, a PGCE in Art & Design, and an MA in Arts Education. That teaching experience comes in handy here, as the session is designed to get you from a blank piece of plywood to a finished print in a single day.

Carousel Print Studio is a not-for-profit charity based in Castlegate, offering printmaking workshops and facilities in an accessible, well-equipped studio. The workshop costs £95, with concessionary rates available for those in receipt of benefits and a 10% discount for members. It runs from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm, five and a half hours in total.
