Free public panel discussion with academics and pensions experts from the Pensions Policy Institute and the Money and Pensions Service on the UK pensions crisis, part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2026.
Who Should Pay For Your Retirement? is a public panel discussion taking place at Sheffield Town Hall on Wednesday 28 October, from 5:45pm to 7:15pm. It's part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science 2026, an annual celebration of the social sciences with free events run by 41 partner institutions across the UK and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council.
The conversation starts with the UK pensions crisis: as the population ages, fewer workers are funding a State Pension system that supports more retirees. That's led the government to speed up State Pension age rises and shift more of the responsibility onto individuals. The panel will draw on research into saving behaviours and public perceptions to weigh the roles of the state, employers and individuals, and ask how certain pension policies entrench inequalities. They'll illustrate that point with a care worker pensions case study.
On the panel are academics and pensions experts from the Pensions Policy Institute and the Money and Pensions Service. Representatives from the Money and Pensions Service will also set out where you can find more information about pensions and saving for retirement. It's a public discussion, so it's as much about the conversation as the experts on stage.
