Roderick Williams, Music in the Round's Singer-in-Residence, performs a programme of English song including Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, accompanied by Christopher Glynn.
Roderick Williams is back at the Playhouse on Saturday 17 October, performing a programme of English song. He's Music in the Round's Singer-in-Residence, and this is his return to the stage with them, this time joined by the Grammy award-winning accompanist Christopher Glynn on piano.
At the heart of the afternoon is Vaughan Williams' Songs of Travel, a cycle described as a musical voyage around the island. It's a well-known set of songs, and it'll take up a good chunk of the programme. Alongside it, there's The Moon, the Moss & the Mushrooms, a new commission by Freya Waley-Cohen inspired by the Exmoor landscape and its fairy-tale folklore. So you've got a classic of the English song repertoire sitting next to a brand new piece, both drawing on the British countryside in their own way.
As for the two on stage, the reviews have been kind. Critics have called Williams a 'national treasure' and described his approach to the English Romantic song repertoire as 'revelatory'. Glynn's piano playing has been called 'poised and poetic'. It's a small setup — just voice and piano — and the whole thing is built around the two of them working together.

The performance runs for around an hour and 45 minutes, including an interval, and it starts at 2pm. If you're planning to go, that's the main thing to keep in mind: it's a Saturday afternoon concert, not an evening one, so you'll be out well before dinner.
