World premiere of the musical adaptation of Irvine Welsh's novel, with a live band, recommended for ages 15+.
Trainspotting The Musical has its world premiere at Sheffield City Hall on Thursday 29 October, with the show running from 26 to 31 October. It's Irvine Welsh's own novel brought to the stage, with the book written by Welsh and the music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness and Welsh. Caroline Jay Ranger directed and developed the production.
The story follows the same group you'll remember from the book and the film: Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly, the industrial drug-crazed working-class heroes. They're back on stage alongside an ensemble cast and a live band, so it's a full company and a live sound rather than a small cast and a backing track. The production is described as funny, loud and dynamic, with a dark, dangerous energy that carries through the whole thing.
There's a specific angle to this version, too. Thirty years on from the film that changed everything, the show looks at how the ground has shifted. In 1996, 'Choose Life' sounded like a challenge; three decades later, the landscape has changed but the hunger hasn't, with addiction quieter and more embedded, moving from needle to screen. It's the same story, but seen from where we are now.
