Live show by Thistle Sifter, the cinematic post-rock project of Pete Barnes, at The Lughole.
Thistle Sifter play The Lughole on Sunday 7 February, with the music starting at 8:00 PM. It's the cinematic post-rock project of English musician Pete Barnes, who's based in Utrecht, and the live line-up for the night is Barnes on guitar and synths, Nils Breunese on guitar, Alex Rushmer on bass and synths, and Koen Klarenbeek on drums.
The project took a sharp turn in November 2020 after Barnes had a serious cycling accident, and it's since become the platform he uses to work through his personal struggles. He describes the sound as serene post-rock, spacey synth ambience, evolving soundscapes and lo-fi folk โ a mix that sits somewhere between the quiet and the expansive.
His most ambitious work to date, Forever The Optimist, looks at the existential issues that come from how we've neglected the natural world and each other. The eight compositions touch on land use, animal rights, cobalt mining in the Congo, climate breakdown, neo-liberalism and the media's complicity in genocide, and Barnes draws on writers like Jay Griffiths, George Monbiot, Omar El Akkad and Siddharth Kara. Each track is paired with thematic visuals, and he's toured the immersive audiovisual show across Europe, playing AFAS Live in Amsterdam as a Sigur Rรณs aftershow, Farewell Youth Fest in Dresden and fringe appearances at Le Guess Who?.
