A talk by Dr Rachel Newsome on the concepts and theories of Carl Jung, part of the Seed Talks series.
Dr Rachel Newsome is talking about the psychology of Carl Jung at the Nelson Mandela Auditorium in the Sheffield Students' Union on Tuesday 1 December. The talk is part of Seed Talks, and it takes Jung from the history books into the room.
Jung was a founding father of depth psychology and a maverick thinker who spent his life looking at ancient religions, mythologies and dream work. Out of that came the concepts most of us recognise by name: the collective unconscious, the archetypes — the shadow and the self — synchronicity, individuation and active imagination, or 'dreaming awake'. If you've ever come across those terms in a book or a podcast and wondered what they actually mean in practice, this is the kind of evening that spells them out.
Newsome is a Jungian-based writer and teacher who holds a doctorate in applying Jungian psychoanalysis to creative writing. She also runs 'Depth Writing With Dr Rachel', a holistic creative learning programme, so she's used to taking these abstract ideas and making them something you can actually work with. The talk is less about the academic history of the man and more about the ideas he left behind.
