Live folk music gig by The Mary Wallopers at the Octagon Centre, part of the Paddywhackery Live 2026 tour.
The Mary Wallopers play the Octagon Centre on Monday 19 October, as part of the Paddywhackery Live 2026 tour. They're a folk group from Dundalk, Ireland, who spend their time travelling the length and breadth of the country singing and collecting songs. The night is for over-14s only, and they'll be joined on stage by special guests.
If you're not familiar with them, the descriptions of their sound are half the fun. Mojo calls it 'the punk spirit of Irish traditional music', and NME says they inject 'a thrillingly contemporary political zeal into a songbook that was dying to be dragged into the 21st century'. UNCUT puts them in the territory of The Pogues, speaking of 'a raucous power to traditional Irish music not seen since their heyday'. One reviewer summed the whole thing up as 'the Clancy Brothers meet John Lydon'. It's that mix of old-school Irish folk and a loud, restless energy that puts them apart from the more polite end of the tradition.
