Over-18s punk show by The King Blues, who fuse punk, ska, spoken word and hip-hop, at The Corporation.
The King Blues play Corporation on Friday 6 November, their only Sheffield date of the run. It's a London-born punk band formed in 2004, and they've spent the years since building a sound that doesn't sit neatly in one box: punk, ska, spoken word and hip-hop all in the same set, with politically charged lyrics and raw poetry layered over driving brass and hip-hop rhythms.
They split in 2012 and reunited in 2016, and the new material they're touring comes from A Monkey Could Do That, an album that runs to 22 new songs and two new poems. They describe it as their heaviest and most diverse record to date, so it should give a good sense of where they're at now. The set will be built around that, with the brass and the spoken word taking a fair bit of the space.
If you're not familiar with them, they've always been a band that leans into the political, and that's still the core of what they do. The punk and ska elements provide the energy, but the spoken word and hip-hop rhythms are where the lyrics get their room to breathe. It's a combination that's defined them since the early days, and A Monkey Could Do That keeps that going across a long stretch of new songs.
