Club night Strictly 4x4 with bassline MC Tez Kidd at ONYX in Sheffield.
Strictly 4x4 - A new beginning is coming to ONYX on Saturday 21 November, with Tez Kidd on the bill. It's a club night under the Strictly 4x4 banner, and the title does the talking here: it's all about the 4x4 bassline sound that's been a part of the city's rave history for years.
Tez Kidd is the name to know for this one. He's a hip hop and southern hip hop artist from New Orleans, born in 1983, who also records and performs as T£Z and T£Z Scar Fizza. He describes himself as the founder and originator of a northern bassline MC movement, having moved from hip hop into grime to make music closer to his own life. He got his start MCing over classic niche tracks at underground events like Bobby Geez in Sheffield, nights founded by Titchiano between 2001 and 2003 that helped bring a darker element of grime and 4x4 into the rave scene.
One of his early records, 'Browninz', was built over a T2-produced beat and first played at Sherridanz club in Dewsbury after Niche Nightclub closed. It later found its way onto Ministry of Sound/Niche's Soundz of Bassline triple CD, so if you've spent any time with the city's bassline archives, that's a name you'll recognise. This night sits right in that same lineage.
