Two-hour tribute set by Straighten Out, recreating the early sound of The Stranglers with a Hammond organ and Minimoog synth.
Straighten Out are playing The Cutlers Arms on Saturday 19 December, a tribute to The Stranglers. They're a tribute act that focuses on the band's early years, and the set runs for around two hours.
What sets them apart is the gear they use. They play with a Hammond organ and a Minimoog synth, the same models Martin 'Mr. Greenfield' Greenfield used back in the day, and they split the vocals in the style of Hugh Cornwell and Jean-Jacques Burnel. The setlist works through The Stranglers' classic early albums and beyond, with songs like 'Peaches', 'Hanging Around', 'No More Heroes', '5 Minutes', 'The Raven', 'Walk On By', 'Straighten Out' and 'Down In The Sewer'.
They describe themselves as the world's premier Stranglers tribute band, and the two-hour set is built around recreating the sound of the group's early years. The Hammond and Minimoog are the core of that sound, so they're not just playing the songs — they're using the same instruments that defined the original recordings. Between the two vocalists, they cover the different voices that ran through the early records, from Cornwell's lead to Burnel's contributions.
