Self-guided audio walking tour of 15 historic Sheffield landmarks, downloaded on the AudaTours app and walked at your own pace.
Steel City Through Time: A Sheffield Sound Odyssey kicks off at the Crucible Theatre on Monday 19 October, and it's not a show in the usual sense. It's a self-guided audio tour from AudaTours that lets you uncover the stories hidden behind Sheffield's stone façades, from ruined castles sleeping under busy streets to cathedral crypts and the scandals that once erupted in places like Paradise Square. There's no in-person guide to follow; you download the free AudaTours app, enter a redemption code sent by email, and walk the city at your own pace.
The route runs for around 2.8 km (1.7 miles) across 15 landmarks, including Sheffield Castle, the Cathedral Church of St Marie, Tudor Square and the Company of Cutlers in Hallamshire. Along the way, you'll get up to 38 minutes of narration, so you can stop and linger where something catches your eye or keep moving if you're in a hurry. Once it's downloaded, the whole thing works entirely offline, which is handy if you're not keen on relying on a signal while you're out and about.
Because you're in charge of the timing, it's pitched at solo travellers, couples, families and small groups who'd rather explore on their own schedule than follow a guide and a fixed departure time. You can start whenever suits you, take as long as you like at each stop, and finish when you're ready. It's a good shout if you've always wanted to know what's tucked away beneath the city centre but prefer to do it your own way.
