Gospel concert celebrating Black History Month with MOBO Award winner Janine Dyer and the Sheffield Community Gospel Choir.
The Sheffield Community Gospel Choir are playing Upper Chapel on Saturday 31 October, with the night built around live gospel music. They're headlining alongside Janine Dyer, a MOBO Award winner and former The Voice UK contestant, so it's a full choir set rather than a small ensemble.
If you've not come across them before, the choir is one of the city's best-known community gospel groups. They've appeared on BBC One's The One Show, were a Songs of Praise Gospel Choir of the Year finalist in 2016, and got a 'yes' from all four judges on Britain's Got Talent. The concert is framed as a celebration of Black History Month, and it leans into the genre's heritage: powerful voices, big harmonies, and an audience invited to clap and sing along. It's the kind of gospel that's meant to be felt as much as heard, and with a full choir on stage, the sound should carry.
