Informal philosophy session using the Philosophy for Communities method to explore artworks around the Graves Gallery.
Sharing the View: Philosophy in the Gallery returns to the Graves Gallery on Friday 30 October, starting at 13:30. It's a monthly session that takes the gallery's collection and turns it into a conversation, rather than just something you look at in silence.
The session is run by Rosie Carnall, who uses the Philosophy for Communities (P4C) method. Each month she picks a new question, topic or idea and then selects artworks from around the gallery to explore. From there, she leads an informal but in-depth conversation, so you'll spend as much time talking and thinking as you do looking at the walls. It's less about knowing the 'right' answer and more about working through an idea together.
That's where the venue comes in. The Graves Gallery is the Art Deco home of Sheffield's visual art collection, sitting just across from the Millennium Gallery. It's currently in the middle of a five-year redisplay programme supported by the Ampersand Foundation, with 40% of the displays rehung every year. The collection includes work by David Hockney, John Hoyland, Tess Jaray, Bridget Riley, Keith Piper, Marc Quinn and JMW Turner, so there's plenty to pull from. The building itself is also the subject of a planned major redevelopment of the Graves Gallery and Central Library.
