RUNTOWN LIVE

Runtown plays ONYX Nightclub in Sheffield on Friday 30 October, his only date in the city this autumn. He's billed as an Afrobeat star who performs live, and the set is built around his hit singles, from Mad Over You to Galladdo.

If you've followed his work, those two titles cover a good bit of ground. Mad Over You is the one that really put him on the map, and Galladdo is one of the bigger tracks that followed. He's described as playing all his hit singles, so you can expect a set that leans on the songs you'll recognise rather than a deep dive into the B-sides. It's a live show, too, so he'll be performing them in the flesh rather than just spinning a DJ set.

He's an Afrobeat artist, so the sound is built on those syncopated rhythms and the melodic, singing-rapping style that's come out of the scene. If you're not familiar, that's the blend of West African highlife and fuji music with dancehall and pop — the kind of thing that works just as well on a dancefloor as it does on headphones. He's playing the hits, so the night is geared more towards the songs people know than towards new or experimental material.

The show is at ONYX Nightclub, and it's a late one: it starts at 10:30 PM on Friday 30 October. Since it's a nightclub venue and a late start, it's the kind of night that runs well into the early hours rather than one you'll be home from by midnight.
